THE NEED
Virtually everyone knows of a family impacted by a child with special needs whether it’s a family member, friend or your own child. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control reports approximately 1 in 6 children have a developmental disability in the United States.* Autism alone has increased nearly 300% in a 12 year period.*
Unfortunately, funding for special needs programs at the federal and state level has been inadequate and in recent years many public schools have experienced budget cuts in special education. Without an increase in early intervention and special education services, our children may not reach their full potential and our educational, healthcare and welfare systems will be even more overburdened.
Support for Parents
Our services are not intended to replace the special education support provided by the local school district but rather to supplement, complement and enhance those services especially for families that don’t have the resources to utilize these support services on their own.
We are here to help families with:
With proper assessment and diagnosis parents can better identify their child’s educational needs and develop appropriate academic methods and life strategies. We can help families start that journey.
Through training we aid parents in becoming powerful advocates for their child. We can help families understand their rights, and provide input in developing an effective Individual Education Plan (IEP). Negotiating the special education maze is often confusing and complex.
We provide children with supplemental education, tutoring and therapy because many schools can’t provide all the services needed for every child to reach their full potential. LOFL facilitates therapeutic services like equine therapy and life skills development through social skills groups and employment readiness training.
Parents will have an opportunity to interact with other parents who have walked in their shoes through a Bible-based, small group that meets on a weekly basis. Raising a child with special needs can often leave families feeling overwhelmed and alone.
